The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) has an age limit and a number of attempts for the candidates. The number of attempts a candidate is allowed to take depends on their age and the category they belong to.
General Category candidates: A general category candidate can take the UPSC CSE for a maximum of six attempts until they reach the age of 32 years.
OBC (Other Backward Classes) category candidates: OBC category candidates can take the UPSC CSE for a maximum of nine attempts until they reach the age of 35 years.
SC/ST (Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe) category candidates: SC/ST category candidates can take the UPSC CSE for a maximum of unlimited attempts until they reach the age of 37 years.
It’s worth noting that the above mentioned attempt limits are as per the current rules, and the UPSC can change the rules as per their discretion.
It’s also worth noting that the number of attempts is not the only determinant of success in the UPSC CSE, having a clear understanding of the exam pattern and syllabus, a regular study schedule, focus on the important topics and regularly evaluating the progress before attempting the exam, are some of the key factors which can contribute to success in the UPSC CSE.
