IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officers can be removed or dismissed from their position under certain circumstances, but it is a rare occurrence.
IAS officers are appointed by the President of India, and their services can only be terminated by the President. The President can terminate an IAS officer’s service under the following circumstances:
if the officer is found guilty of misconduct or is incapacitated from performing their duties
if the officer is convicted of a criminal offence
if the officer is deemed to be inefficient or incapacitated for the service
An IAS officer can also be compulsorily retired if they have reached the age of superannuation (60 years) or if the President or the Governor of the state, where the officer is serving, is satisfied that the officer is unable to discharge their duties efficiently due to any physical or mental ailment.
In addition, IAS officers are also held accountable for their actions and can be subjected to disciplinary proceedings or departmental enquiries for any misconduct or failure to perform their duties to the satisfaction of the government.
It’s worth noting that, like any other government officials, IAS officers are expected to maintain high standards of integrity and conduct, and any misconduct or violation of rules and regulations can lead to serious consequences.
