It is possible to become an IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer without a background in science, as the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) Civil Services Examination (CSE) is open to candidates from all educational backgrounds. The CSE is a multi-stage examination consisting of the Preliminary Exam, the Main Exam, and the Personality Test (Interview).
In the main examination, there are two general studies papers, four general studies papers and two optional papers. The general studies papers cover a wide range of topics, including Indian heritage and culture, history and geography of the world and society, governance, constitution, polity, social justice, international relations, technology, economic development, bio-diversity, environment, security and disaster management, ethics, integrity and aptitude.
The optional papers are intended to test the candidate’s in-depth knowledge and understanding of a specific subject. Candidates have to choose their optional subject from the list of optional subjects provided by the UPSC. The optional subjects are diverse and include subjects like Anthropology, Public Administration, Geography, History, Law, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and many more.
As you can see, the UPSC exam is not restricted to candidates with a science background, and therefore, anyone with a degree or diploma can apply for the exam. However, it’s worth noting that the exam is considered to be very competitive and rigorous, and it takes a lot of hard work, preparation, and dedication to clear it.
In summary, you don’t need to have a science background to become an IAS officer, but you need to have a deep understanding of the syllabus, examination pattern, and be well-prepared for each stage of the examination.
