The UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) calculates the rank of candidates who have cleared the Civil Services Examination (CSE) based on the marks obtained by them in the Main examination (written test) and the Interview or Personality Test.
The marks obtained in the Main examination are divided into two parts: written test and interview. The written test marks are divided into two papers, Paper-I and Paper-II, which are each worth 250 marks. The interview marks are worth 275 marks.
The marks obtained in the Main examination and the Interview are then added together to determine a candidate’s total marks. The total marks are then used to calculate the candidate’s rank.
The UPSC releases the final merit list of all the candidates based on their total marks, including written test and interview marks. Candidates are ranked in descending order of their total marks and are allotted the services as per their merit and the number of vacancies available.
It is important to note that the UPSC uses a process of “tie-breaking” in case two or more candidates have the same marks. In such cases, the candidate who has scored higher marks in the written test will be ranked higher.
