The UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) Civil Services Examination (CSE) Main Exam has two optional papers, which are papers VI and VII. These papers are intended to test the candidate’s in-depth knowledge and understanding of a specific subject.

Candidates have to choose their optional subject from the list of optional subjects provided by the UPSC. The optional subjects are diverse and include subjects like Anthropology, Public Administration, Geography, History, Law, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and many more. It’s worth noting that there are around 40-50 optional subjects offered by the UPSC.

It’s important to choose the optional subject that you have a good academic background or have a deep interest in it. This will help to improve your chances of performing well in the optional papers. Also, the optional papers are a substantial portion of the marks in the Main Exam, so it’s important to give them the same attention and focus as the other papers.

It’s important to note that the UPSC exam is a highly competitive and rigorous examination that requires a significant amount of hard work, preparation, and dedication. It’s also important to have a deep understanding of the syllabus and examination pattern, and to be well-prepared for each stage of the examination.
