The UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) Civil Services Examination (CSE) Main Exam, also known as the written test, consists of a total of nine papers. These papers are divided into two groups – the qualifying papers and the merit ranking papers.

    The qualifying papers are:

Paper A: One of the Indian languages to be selected by the candidate from the languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution.

    Paper B: English

    The merit ranking papers are:

    Paper I: Essay
Paper II: General Studies I (Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society)
Paper III: General Studies II (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations)
Paper IV: General Studies III (Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management)
Paper V: General Studies IV (Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude)
Paper VI (Optional Subject Paper 1)
Paper VII (Optional Subject Paper 2)

It’s worth noting that, candidates must choose one optional subject from the list of optional subjects provided by the UPSC, and they have to write two papers on that subject. The marks obtained in the optional papers will only be used for ranking, if a candidate scores sufficiently high marks in the optional papers.

In summary, the UPSC main exam consists of a total of nine papers, two qualifying papers on Indian Language and English, and seven merit ranking papers on General Studies and an optional subject.
