The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a highly competitive exam that is used to assess a candidate’s aptitude in quantitative ability, verbal ability, and logical reasoning. The score required to be considered for admissions in the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and other top-level management schools in India vary each year and it depends on how many seats are available and how many people are applying. Generally, a good score in CAT is considered to be above the 80-90 percentile range. However, it is important to keep in mind that a good score in CAT is relative to the level of competition each year, as well as the specific program or school you are applying to.
CAT score is divided into two sections, sectional score and overall score. Sectional score denotes the score you scored in each section and the overall score is the composite score of all the sections. IIMs usually have a cut-off for both sectional and overall score. In general, if you have a score above the cut-off you will have a good chance of getting into the top management schools, but the chances of getting into the most prestigious B-schools will be higher if you have a score above 95 percentile.
It’s also important to note that a good CAT score is just one of the factors that are considered during the admissions process, your past academic records, work experience and overall profile also play a big role.
