In the UPSC Civil Services Examination, Paper A and Paper B refer to the two papers that are a part of the written examination for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) posts.
Paper A, also known as the General Studies Paper 1, is a multiple-choice objective-type paper that tests a candidate’s general knowledge and understanding of current events, Indian and world history, Indian and world geography, environmental ecology and biodiversity, and Indian polity and governance.
Paper B, also known as the General Studies Paper 2, is a multiple-choice objective-type paper that tests a candidate’s understanding of international relations, economic and social development, and Indian and world governance and international issues.
The Paper A and Paper B are the first two papers of the UPSC Civil Services Examination, which are held on the first day of the exam. The Paper A and Paper B are both for 250 marks and the total time duration for each paper is 3 hours. The Paper A and Paper B are qualifying in nature and the marks obtained in these papers are not included in the final merit list.
