    The qualifying paper in the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) Civil Services Examination (CSE) refers to the Preliminary Exam, also known as the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). The Preliminary Exam is the first stage of the CSE and it is a multiple-choice question (MCQ) based test, designed to shortlist candidates for the Main Exam.

    The Preliminary Exam consists of two papers, Paper I and Paper II. Paper I is General Studies I, which covers topics such as current events of national and international importance, Indian heritage and culture, history and geography of the world and society, governance, constitution, polity, social justice, international relations, technology, economic development, bio-diversity, environment, security and disaster management, ethics, integrity and aptitude.

    Paper II is Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT), which is designed to test the candidate’s aptitude, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. The CSAT paper includes questions on comprehension, mental ability, logical reasoning and analytical ability, basic numeracy, decision-making and problem-solving, communication skills and English language comprehension skills.

    It’s worth noting that the minimum qualifying marks in Paper I and Paper II of the Preliminary Exam is 33% for General category and 25% for OBC, SC, ST and PwD category. Candidates who pass the preliminary exam will be shortlisted for the main exam.

    In summary, the qualifying paper in UPSC refers to the preliminary exam, which is designed to shortlist the candidates for the main exam, and it consist of two papers, one on general studies and the other on aptitude test. It’s important to note that passing the preliminary exam is a must for appearing in the main examination.
