The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) examination, which consists of three stages:
Preliminary Examination: This is a screening test, also known as the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT), consisting of two objective-type papers: General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II (CSAT). The marks obtained in the preliminary examination are not considered for the final selection.
Main Examination: This is a written examination consisting of nine papers of conventional (essay) type. The papers are:
Essay
General Studies Paper I
General Studies Paper II
General Studies Paper III
General Studies Paper IV
Optional Paper I
Optional Paper II
Indian Language Paper
English Language Paper
Interview: Also known as the Personality Test, is the final stage of the selection process and is conducted to assess the candidate’s suitability for a career in the administrative service.
The final selection is based on the marks obtained in the Main Examination and the Interview.
Please note that the UPSC also conducts other examinations like the Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Forest Service (IFoS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and many more, the pattern of which may vary but mostly follows the same pattern as that of IAS.
