The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) has a comprehensive syllabus that covers a wide range of subjects. The syllabus is divided into two parts: the Preliminary Examination (also known as the Civil Services Aptitude Test or CSAT) and the Main Examination.
Preliminary Examination (CSAT) Syllabus:
Paper 1: General Studies (GS) – Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society, Indian Polity and Governance, Economic and Social Development, Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, Climate Change, and Disaster Management, Security and Strategic Issues.
Paper 2: Aptitude Test (AT) – Comprehension, Interpersonal skills, Logical reasoning and analytical ability, Decision-making and problem-solving, Basic numeracy, and Data interpretation.
Main Examination Syllabus:
1- Paper A: One Indian Language (qualifying paper) – The paper will be of Matriculation or equivalent standard and will be of qualifying nature.
2- Paper B: English (qualifying paper) – The paper will be of Matriculation or equivalent standard and will be of qualifying nature.
3- Paper 1 to 7: Seven papers of conventional essay type, each of 250 marks, in the following subjects:
Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society
Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations
Economic and Social Development- Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
Technology, Economic, Environment and Security
Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude
It’s worth noting that the UPSC also conducts other exams like Indian Forest Service (IFoS), Indian Economic Service (IES), Indian Statistical Service (ISS) and Combined Medical Service (CMS) which have their own syllabus and pattern of examination.
