The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) is open to candidates from all educational backgrounds, and students from various fields have successfully cleared the exam. However, traditionally, students from certain fields have had a higher representation among the successful candidates. These include:

Humanities/Social Sciences: Candidates with degrees in subjects such as History, Political Science, Sociology, Economics, and Public Administration have traditionally had a higher representation among successful candidates.

Law: Candidates with a degree in Law also have a high representation among successful candidates, as the legal background is considered beneficial for understanding the nuances of governance and administration.

Engineering: Many successful candidates have a background in Engineering, as the technical education provides a strong foundation in logical reasoning and problem-solving.

Commerce and Management: Commerce and Management students also have a good representation in UPSC Civil Services Examination as they have knowledge of economics and management which is important for the exam.

It’s worth noting that these are not the only fields that are represented among successful candidates and UPSC is open to all graduates from recognized universities.

The most important factor for UPSC is a candidate’s interest, dedication, and hard work. The ability to read, analyze, and understand complex issues is also key for success in UPSC exam. Therefore, it is not necessary to have a specific educational background to crack the UPSC exam, but having the right attitude, aptitude and the willingness to work hard and prepare for the exam is the key.
