The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination, which is the exam for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and other Civil Services, consists of three stages: the preliminary exam, the main exam, and the interview.
The preliminary exam tests the candidate’s general knowledge and aptitude, and consists of two papers:
Paper 1: General Studies 1 (GS 1) – This paper tests the candidate’s knowledge of Indian heritage and culture, history and geography of the world and society. This paper is compulsory for all candidates.
Paper 2: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) – This paper tests the candidate’s aptitude in areas such as logical reasoning, decision-making, problem-solving, and communication skills. This paper is also compulsory for all candidates.
The main exam tests the candidate’s knowledge and abilities in a variety of subjects and consists of nine papers, including:
Paper A: One Indian language (as per candidate’s preference)
Paper B: English
Paper I: Essay
Paper II: General Studies 1 (GS 1) – Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society
Paper III: General Studies 2 (GS 2) – Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations
Paper IV: General Studies 3 (GS 3) – Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management
Paper V: General Studies 4 (GS 4) – Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude
Paper VI,VII,VIII: Optional subject (2 papers) – Candidate’s choice of subject from a list of optional subjects provided by UPSC
The interview is the final stage of the exam, where the candidate’s suitability for a career in the Civil Services is assessed by a panel of experts.
