    The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination, which is the exam for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), is considered to be one of the most competitive and difficult exams in India. The exam is divided into three stages: the preliminary exam, the main exam, and the interview. Each stage tests the candidate’s knowledge and abilities in a variety of subjects.

    The preliminary exam tests the candidate’s general knowledge and aptitude, and consists of two papers:

    Paper 1: General Studies 1 (GS 1) – This paper tests the candidate’s knowledge of Indian heritage and culture, history and geography of the world and society.

    Paper 2: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) – This paper tests the candidate’s aptitude in areas such as logical reasoning, decision-making, problem-solving, and communication skills.

    The main exam tests the candidate’s knowledge and abilities in a variety of subjects and consists of nine papers, including:

    Paper A: One Indian language (as per candidate’s preference)
    Paper B: English
    Paper I: Essay
    Paper II: General Studies 1 (GS 1) – Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society
    Paper III: General Studies 2 (GS 2) – Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations
    Paper IV: General Studies 3 (GS 3) – Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management
    Paper V: General Studies 4 (GS 4) – Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude
    Paper VI,VII,VIII: Optional subject (2 papers) – Candidate’s choice of subject from a list of optional subjects provided by UPSC
    The interview is the final stage of the exam, where the candidate’s suitability for a career in the Civil Services is assessed by a panel of experts.

    In summary, the UPSC Civil Services Examination tests the candidate’s knowledge and abilities in a variety of subjects.
